Systems-Driven Transformation: Integrating Smart, Sustainable, and Green Principles into the Management of Complex Systems such as Healthcare
University and healthcare estates face mounting pressures — ageing infrastructure, financial constraints, and the drive to meet net-zero and digital transformation goals. This session introduces a systems-based approach to estate optimisation, showing how interconnected networks of energy, buildings, transport, and digital systems can be managed holistically for greater resilience and sustainability. Drawing on real-world projects from Birmingham City University’s Smart, Sustainable and Green (SSG) Cities Research Alliance, we’ll explore how smart building technologies, AI, and nature-based solutions are transforming operations and supporting net-zero strategies. Case studies include AI-driven supply chain optimisation, smart infrastructure monitoring, and green urban regeneration partnerships. The session highlights why smart, sustainable, and green ambitions must be pursued together — and how collaborative research and innovation can accelerate this transition.
